Pendant Plating & Finish Guide: What Buyers Should Confirm

Short Answer

Specify a pendant finish in separate parts: the base material, the coating or plating description, the desired appearance, the components covered and the evidence needed for approval. A gold-tone photograph is not a gold specification. A gold-plated copper description is more specific, but does not by itself state plating thickness, gold purity, durability or compliance. Confirm those requirements against the selected product before approving a quotation or sample.

Start with the Exact Product and Component Scope

Choose the pendant reference before discussing its finish. Identify the decorative body, setting, connecting ring and clasp, and say which parts must share the same appearance. If a photograph includes a chain, ask whether the chain is supplied or is only part of the display. A description for the pendant should not silently become a specification for every item shown in the photograph.

The selected pendant stock records describe the four documented references as gold-plated copper with individual packaging. Decorative insert composition, plating thickness and gold purity are not specified. Treat this as the starting record for those references, not as a specification for all pendants or proof of a completed custom production project.

Separate Appearance from the Written Specification

Terms such as gold tone, polished or matte describe a requested look. Ask the supplier to record the proposed base material and coating separately. If you require a particular composition, thickness or additional surface treatment, put that requirement in the RFQ and request confirmation. Do not fill missing fields with assumptions simply because two samples look similar.

Use a Physical Reference for Appearance Approval

Send a clear reference image to start the discussion, then agree how the actual sample will be compared. Identify the reference by style, version and approval date. Record whether the finish should match an existing accessory, the clasp, another pendant in the collection or a separate brand sample. Avoid a brief that only says “same gold” without naming the approved reference.

Review the visible front, back, edges and fittings together. Note any difference you want changed and identify the affected part. A sample approval should say what was accepted, not merely that a photograph was received. Keep the approved reference available for later comparison and agree whether a revised sample is needed after a material or construction change.

Ask for Evidence that Matches Your Requirement

If thickness, surface performance or destination-specific documentation matters to the project, state that requirement before quotation. Ask what can be supplied, which sample or part the documentation covers, and what remains unverified. A generic supplier document should not be treated as proof for a different pendant or a different finish configuration.

Provide the intended application and destination, agree the required review with the supplier, and keep visual approval separate from any testing or compliance assessment.

Review Finish and Attachment as One Assembly

When the pendant uses a separate ring or clasp, include those parts in the finish discussion. Ask whether the material statement covers them, which surfaces will touch after assembly and whether the proposed finish needs review at those contact points. Confirm which parts are included in the quote and who will assemble them.

Include Packaging and Changes in the Approval Record

Ask how the finished pieces will be separated and protected within their individual or assortment packs. Review a pack sample using the actual pendant and any supplied chain or fitting. Keep the selected reference, material statement, finish direction, component list, sample comments and packaging revision together. If the supplier proposes a substitution, request a written description and confirm whether the change needs another approval. Do not rely on an old photograph to approve a newly proposed specification.
